In the New Year’s concerts at the Budokan Ya-Ya-yah perform A Hard Days Night, just like The Beatles themselves have done some 40 years earlier. News reports are enthusiastic and everything points towards a Ya-Ya-yah debut in 2007.
February
It’s announced that from April Ya-Ya-yah’s TV program will leave the timeslot it has occupied for over 4 years and be moved to the supposedly better Saturday 6:30pm timeslot. I’m convinced that this is just another sign of an impending debut. Now, 10 months later, it’s clear to me that the Ya-Ya-yah show had already jumped the shark 6 months earlier, on August 20, 2006 when they had the first TEPPAN segment.
March
Everyone is waiting for a debut announcement at the recording of the April Shonen Clubs. It doesn’t happen, and I’m beginning to get confused. Confused and impatient with the way things, especially the Ya-Ya-yah program, are going. And with the help of markl02 I take my first steps into the world of fansubbing by releasing English subtitles for the 2006 Tantei Gakuen Q SP
April
The month starts with a huge marketing campaign with Ya-Ya-yah announcing the new timeslot of their show from the big TV screens in Shibuya. No word of a debut though.
May
Ya-Ya-yah perform their new song 今進もう [Ima susumou] on Shonen Club, playing instruments and all. Other than that, no sign of a debut. It’s announced that Yamada Ryosuke will star in Tatei Gakuen Q which will start airing in July.
June
It’s announced that Hey!Say!7 will release a single in August. And while they play Tokyo Dome supporting KAT-TUN (which won’t be their last appearance at Tokyo Dome this year).
July
Yamada Ryosuke co-stars in Tantei Gakuen Q, Morimoto Ryutaro co-stars in Juken no Kamisama. Takizawa Enbujo co-stars Yabu and Hikaru, but not Taiyo and Shoon. At the end of Takizawa Enbujo Yabu and Hikaru perform a new song called Baby Babe.
August
Hey!Say!7 top the Oricon charts with their single Hey!Say!. Okamoto Keito makes his first TV appearance as a backdancer for HS7 on Music Station. Ya-Ya-yah perform Baby Babe at the Daibouken concerts.
September
Hey!Say!JUMP’s debut is announced live on national TV from the Johnny’s Jr. concert at Yokohama Arena, and Johnny Kitagawa is quoted saying “Showa is already useless“.
October
It’s confirmed that the new program Hi!Hey!Say!, starring Yabu and Hikaru, will replace Ya-Ya-yah. Hey!Say!JUMP start UMPing and they won’t stop it for the next 2 months. Yuto, Ryosuke and Ryutaro are regulars on the Sunday afternoon TV program Heisei Families. After four and a half years and 247 shows Ya-Ya-yah finally goes off the air.
November
Hey!Say!JUMP debut and their single Ultra Music Power goes platinum within the first 2 weeks. The new TV program Hi!Hey!Say! is boring as hell. Hey!Say!JUMP are special-supporting the Japanese teams at the Volleyball World Cup and get to perform Ultra Music Power live on national TV some 20 times within a month. Ryosuke is confirmed to appear in Kamenashi Kazuya’s new drama 1-Pound Gospel which will start airing in January.
December
Taiyo has left Johnny’s. Ya-Ya-yah will never come back. Hey!Say!BEST go sexy with their performance of 「ス・リ・ル」. Hey!Say!JUMP play their debut concert to a packed Tokyo Dome and announce a “big event” for the summer of 2008.
In other news, there will be an album release of Johnny’s Junior Special called Golden Best on January 23, 2008. Johnny’s Junior Special is the name of a Johnny’s unit that was active in the mid 1970s. This Golden Best album contains 25 classic songs from that era.
